Rib Tread Tire
These type of garden tractor tires are used primarily on the front wheels. Once again, these tires have a very low tread depth in deference to your lawn and any hot pavement you may traverse. You’ll also find tow behind garden carts as well as some hand trucks using these type of tires.
Lug Tread Tire
This type of garden tractor tire is used in situations where traction is a big deal. Places where there is loose gravel, when you’ve got a hilly property to traverse and for plowing snow in the winter. You’ll only find these type of tires on the rear wheels. But it’s important to note that damage can occur to turf with these tires, even though they are in the back. But with such an aggressive tread, this is to be expected. Not a good choice for a tire that’s on a tractor that mows the lawn on a regular basis.
Commercial Grade Turf Tire
As its name suggests, you’ll see these type of garden tractor tires on commercial mowers. These are quite similar to the square shoulder tire, but they have a heavier ply rating and much deeper treads for long life. This type of tire is normally found on golf course mowers as well as mowers that professional landscaping companies use.
In the end, determining which of the garden tractor tires that you use is going to come down to how you are utilizing your tractor.
